"Times of India" continues great coverage

The on-line site of the Times of India has done a superb job in covering the siege of the terrorist attacks, under very difficult circumstances and lack of information. I just checked for updates and not only are they beginning to provide information about the victims, and those who survived, but they also have an article identifying the terrorists by name, the outline of their plan, and other information, all given by the surviving terrorist. Here's the article. I've very impressed with what a great job TOI has done in this coverage.

Cultural diplomacy: points to remember

The event in Mumbai is a good opportunity to restate some of what I have already discussed, and put it in an easy reference list. Here I want to focus with you on how to understand and deal with terrorism. Here are the points you must always keep in mind, and then flesh out your policy, strategy and tactics based on this understanding.

1) You cannot ever "kill all of the terrorists."

It is tempting to think that they are a certain number of people who can be hunted down and killed, but they are a process, not a generation. Erroneous strategy results if one imagines that there is some fixed number of terrorists who can be killed. Here is a mental exercise to help from falling into that mind trap. Imagine if you are in charge of domestic war against gangs. Can you kill every youth who is in a gang, and think that the phenomenon of gangs then disappears? Of course not. Gangs are a substitute structure for something, reasonable or totally unreasonable, that is lacking in the lives of potential members. Terrorism is likewise a continuing process that draws new generations, not a specific number of people. So it is essential that you do not confuse a policy of vigorously going after "all" terrorists with the delusion that if you kill enough of them that terrorists and terrorism as a concept goes away.

2) Terrorists tend to be morally very conservative.

This is true not only of Islamic extremists, but many of the other problems with terrorism, such as "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland. One must always bear this in mind because it is essential to both understanding terrorists and, if one ever gets to the fortunate point of direct dialogue, negotiating with them. This is because you must understand that moral conservatism is an incentive for peace in negotiating with terrorists. For example, I commented before that I wish that Pope John Paul II had gone further in excommunicating not only IRA members, but those of the flock who supported them. It is important that diplomatic and religious leaders maintain their own moral high ground in dealing with terrorists. Not only do they respect that, but yielding on certain morality issues is a genuine bargaining chip in negotiations. I mean, what is more important, having peace in some region of the Middle East, or insisting that we are only free if we have XXX rated video stores on every corner? Terrorists do not understand or accept the "lowest common denominator" of morality. That "translated" means that terrorists, in general, do not understand why westerners want morals to be invisible or at the level of the lowest practitioner in an area. Western society has this weird view that all of society should be receptive to immoral business and activities in advance of their actually being in an area. Community morals are very important to terrorists.

By the way, this is true even among terrorists who belong to cults who seem to have practices that many view as morally questionable. It is not important that you, as a diplomat, or a combatant of terrorism, judge if the terrorist is truly "morally conservative" or not. What is important is that you understand that he or she fervently believes that they are morally conservative.

As a corollary to this lesson, it is incorrect to say that terrorists only want to "impose their morals on others." Sometimes that is true, but often it is actually the terrorists who want to preserve what had been traditional community standards of morality, which westerners seek to erode for money/business and also a libertine view of "progressive" society. You cannot negotiate with terrorists, in general, if you do not have as background an understanding of this difference.

3) Terrorists recruit from among the poor, the desperate and the disenfranchised.

While their leaders may have access to personal fortunes, it is the poor and the desperate, often as children, who listen to their message and enlist. One useful analogy is to think of terrorists as community organizers and activists, who then go to "the dark side." Terrorists tend to take the problems of poverty and being disenfranchised from the majority very seriously. It is while they remedy these problems, for example setting up their own schools and welfare programs, that continuing more militant youthful terrorists join their ranks. One cannot effectively combat terrorism while there is rank and mind boggling poverty among large groups of disenfranchised people. Many terrorists start out as children in the worst nameless and faceless poverty that few in the west where even the poorest has a social security card can understand. Generations of Palestinians have demonstrated this, and we are now seeing generations of poor children who become terrorists in Asia, such as Pakistan, India and other countries. The continent of Africa has many examples of this too, fueling tribal conflict and horrible recruitment of child soldiers. One cannot effectively combat terrorism without at the same time and with equal, not less, vigor combat poverty in the home grown terrorist nations.

I could offer more suggestions, but I remember from my corporate presentation days that three points are the ideal number for maximum memory and effectiveness of implementation. I hope that you have found this helpful.

Commend the bravery of the Indian commandos

There is no question that the Indian commandos have shown extraordinary bravery and tenacity, an honor to them, in the fight for control of the Mumbai hostage sites. They risked their lives for day after day, fighting a professional and well trained enemy in the dark, and they risked their lives equally for people of every nationality, culture and faith. So I think everyone should give them as individuals a lot of credit, even when it seems that some of their commanders' tactics could be legitimately questioned after all of this is done. I was dismayed to read that it took so long to get them to each scene, and their lack of information about the situation, but that certainly is not a detraction to the bravery and skill of each individual commando. I hope that they have had few casualties and woundings and wish them the best going forward.

Go back to church, synagogue and mosque

Abandon the "New Age" and the occult, like "astrology." Seriously. It is doing all of you more harm than you can ever realize. Far from being "enlightened" and affirmative, it is a depressive set of handcuffs that deny the goodness of God that strives to operate within each person to achieve the greatest goodness, denying that goodness and surrendering one's self to the depressive view of a churning cruel world of "fate."

A spokesperson for such a community who lost two members in Mumbai, killed by terrorists, one a child, said in response to a question from the press regarding what she thought of the terrorists that the terrorists were like "95% of the rest of the world's population."

Friends, that is how cultists view everyone else. Is 95% of the world "just like the terrorists?" You know, the great unwashed unenlighted who only have their eyes, as she put it "on the ground."

I don't think so and neither does the real One God.

Words of comfort to our friends at Chabad

Regular readers of my blog know that I have a link to Chabad, who has suffered a terrible loss in Mumbai. Here are my words of comfort, and I hope they help.

Job 4:1-4

If someone attempts a word with you, will you mind?
For how can anyone refrain from speaking?
Behold, you have instructed many,
and have made firm their feeble hands.
Your words have upheld the stumbler;
you have strengthened his faltering knees.

Psalm 50:1-6

The Lord, the God of gods,
has spoken and summoned the earth
from the rising of the sun to its setting.
From Zion God shines forth,
perfect in beauty.
Our God comes and will not be silent!
Devouring fire precedes,
storming fiercely round about.
God summons the heavens above
and the earth to the judgment of his people;

"Gather my faithful ones before me,
those who made a covenant with me by sacrifice."

The heavens proclaim divine justice,
for God alone is the judge. Selah.

More from Mumbai, motivations?

I don't know about you, but I've been frustrated by the chaos, particularly as reported here on the news networks, claiming that the terrorists have not spoken and not given a motive.

Yet here is this snip from the Times of India.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Release_all_mujahideen_Terrorist/articleshow/3762100.cms

We want all Mujahideen released: Terrorist inside Oberoi

MUMBAI: A militant holed up inside Mumbai's Oberoi Hotel told a television news channel on Thursday that seven attackers were holding hostages

Firemen try to douse fire at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai. (Reuters Photo)

"There are seven of us inside hotel Oberoi," the man identified as Sahadullah told the channel. "We want all Mujahideens held in India released and only after that we will release the people."

The terrorist said he belonged to an Indian Islamist group that is seeking an end to the persecution of Indian Muslims.

Identifying himself as a member of a group calling itself Deccan Mujahedeen, the gunman, who was holed up in the Oberoi Trident Hotel, called for the release of all fellow Islamic militants detained in India.

"Muslims in India should not be persecuted. We love this as our country but when our mothers and sisters were being killed, where was everybody?" he told the channel by phone from inside the hotel, which is surrounded by army commandos. "Release all the Mujahideens, and Muslims living in India should not be troubled," he said.

***
OK, my point in posting this is that I'm suspicious that Indian officials might not release all that they know about the motives of the terrorists. They are riding a wave of understandable worldwide sympathy and condemnation of the attacks... but they are also kind of making it look like these guys are killing for no "reason" (no matter how mistaken the reason may be). Britain and the USA in particular must be a little wary in future days of how much they are actually obtaining in good intelligence regarding motives. I suspect the lack of hostage negotiating is kind of going both ways, if you know what I mean.

My thoughts about Mumbia, India situation

No one has official word about who is behind the terrorist attacks, so to give advice I have to make some assumptions. I'll assume that they represent Islamic believers on the extreme end of the faith scale.

India has put itself into quite a pickle with their deliberate ignoring of their own Christians being tortured, killed, raped, publicly paraded naked, and driven out of their homes into the jungle and camps, where they are homeless and sick. Why does this have an impact on the terrorist attacks? Disdain. One cannot negotiate with Islamic extremists if you are demonstrated unbelievers, who persecute other believers. While many assume that Islamic terrorists only consider fellow Muslims to be believers, when negotiating, one still wants to avoid their contempt and disdain that has resulted from showing that you are a persecutor of believers, especially in such an immodest way. The USA learned that to their extreme discomfort in what they did to some Iraqi prisoners, making them be naked and depraved in prison. Remember also that Islam is a belief based on total equality, where there is no class system, unlike the most repressive class system what was ever created, which still exists in India.

So while I am not saying that the terrorists made their action for any reason other than their own cause, I am giving India some cultural diplomacy advice that they have ignored, including in their dealings with me, at their peril. I find it interesting that there are reports of a Jewish prayer center being occupied with hostages of a rabbi, his wife and others. If true, I think the odds of the hostages surviving are best if they are perceived as believers rather than political representatives. You see what I mean? But this is all guesswork at this point, is it not?

My point is that the "land of Gandhi" has no credibility as far as being perceived by those who have devout and even fanatic motivation by their serving God, whether their actions bring credit to God or not in fact. There is no Muslim who would not be horrified at what treatment the Indian government has ignored (and even the police encouraged), when priests and nuns were stripped, sexually assaulted, tortured, murdered, paraded and defamed. Muslim extremists would make note of the weakness and complicity of the police in attacking Christians. Notice that high ranking police were quickly killed in the assault. You are in a difficult position, in both battle and negotiation, if your opponent has total contempt for you. It creates an "anything goes" mentality in achieving one's objectives, one that is difficult to either thwart or negotiate with, especially as they will gladly achieve what they consider to be martyrdom.

Ten years ago I had a job where I had dozens of Indian green card holders working for me. I was fond of them and defended them against those who poked fun at their Hindu beliefs. Yet, my sense of fondness was drained away as I found that Indian occult beliefs (astrology) informed many of those who stalked and persecuted me. Indians, behind the scenes, stalked and persecuted me, making my life miserable, because of their imaginary beliefs in crazy reincarnation, and their ambition at trying to manipulate the future, rather than trusting in God and having any sort of humility.

One must remember that the way you treat your own people opens the door for how extremists will treat you. That is called "escalation." Even if there is no common ground between people your country persecutes, Christians, in this example, and the presumed Islamic terrorists in Mumbai, they watch TV, they read the papers, they do their research, and they observe whenever a country, especially its police, loses the moral high ground due to their own disgraceful behavior. This is why the terrorists will usually fight to the death, since they are confident they have the moral high ground. It is never helpful in fighting terrorism or negotiating if a country inflates the terrorists perception that indeed, they are fighting immoral and corrupt institutions.

That said, it is never right to take innocent life. But again, we look around the world and see those areas where life is perceived as being "cheap." The tone is first set by the home culture, not by the intruder.

More detailed Mumbai attack coverage

The Times of India has an article that gives much more information about what has happened and what is going on in Mumbai.

Hindus continue Christian killing

And also, as I've pointed out, their "real" agenda, which is not spiritual, but to continue to oppress the "untouchables." So, not surprisingly, they are busy burning down the poor homes that the "untouchables" (India's bottom rung "class" of people) live in, while killing Christians, who minister to the untouchables. The latest Christian victims are two Baptists, executed by a mob at gunpoint.

It is the worst when doctors go bad

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Two_doctors_held_for_committing_fraud/articleshow/3471179.cms

LUCKNOW: Two doctors were arrested for allegedly committing fraud by failing to inform a father that his child had died during treatment, police said on Thursday.

Dr Mirza Waqar Beg and Dr Satish Kumar on Wednesday taken into the custody after complainant Shahid Pervez alleged that the doctors kept the body of his dead son in their private hospital for non-payment of dues, they said.

He also alleged in his report lodged on April l7 in Kaiserbagh police station that doctors committed fraud from him by not disclosing that his son, who was admitted to the neonatal ward of the hospital, had died during the treatment.

Pervez alleged that the doctors had kept the infant, who died at midnight, on a ventilator till the morning. Later, postmortem report revealed timing of death.

The arrests were made after preliminary enquiry suggested alleged involvement of doctors in the fraud, police added.

Thousands feared dead in India floods

Condolences to the poor and innocent who are suffering.

Maybe if their government worked more on public works projects instead of computers, and maybe if certain citizenry worked more on rescue and relief rather than raping, setting on fire, beating and killing Christians, maybe things would be better? Just a thought.

http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/2000-feared-dead-in-floods/2008/08/30/1219516798000.html

Maybe the rapists should be taken to temples of Kali and have their willies cut off. Then they can board boats painted with skulls and join in the rescue work.

Read about Hindu ethics, enjoy the rape scene!

After all, the Police and many others seemed to enjoy seeing the nun stripped, tortured and gang raped. Love that Hindu ethics!

By the way, notice the part where they try to force the priest to rape the nun (after she had already been thoroughly raped by the pig gang). That's a favorite Nazi torture, to force family members to rape each other, you know, mother-son, brother-sister. Nazis really dug that. Guess the Hindus are channeling Nazis now.

http://www.catholicnews.com/data/stories/cns/0804430.htm

Father Chellen said he fled through the backyard with another priest and a nun."It was heartbreaking for us to watch from a distance the entire complex go up in smoke," said Father Chellen, who had supervised the construction of the center that opened in 2001 and could accommodate 200 people.

"They vandalized everything and set it on fire. It has been reduced to ashes," he added.

snip

The following morning, he said, the Hindu family moved the priest and nun to an adjacent vacant house and locked it to give the impression that no one was inside.

However, the Hindu mobs overheard the priest speaking on his cell phone, broke into the room and dragged him and the nun outside."They began our crucifixion parade," said Father Chellen. The gang of about 50 armed Hindus "beat us up and led us like culprits along the road" to the burned pastoral center.

"There they tore my shirt and started pulling off the clothes of the nun. When I protested, they beat me hard with iron rods. Later, they took the sister inside (and) raped her while they went on kicking and teasing me, forcing (me) to say vulgar words," said the priest who has cuts, bruises and swollen tissue all over his body and stitches on his face.

"Later both of us, half-naked, were taken to the street, and they ordered me to have sex with the nun in public, saying nuns and priests do it. As I refused, they went on beating me and dragged us to the nearby government office. Sadly, a dozen policemen were watching all this," he said.Angry at his plea to the police for help, the mob beat the bleeding priest again.

Later, a government official and members of the mob took the priest and the nun to the police station, where Father Chellen said he was kicked in the face.

"The four-hour ordeal ended when a senior police officer arrived in the evening," said Father Chellen. The priest said one of the most hurtful things about the incident was that some local Hindus whom he knew were watching the events and ignored his requests for help.

Later, the priest and nun were taken to a nearby police camp, he said."They were very kind to us, gave us clothes and slippers," said Father Chellen. On Aug. 26, the priest and the nun were taken for medical tests. That afternoon they were sent by bus to Bhubaneswar.Father Chellen said he was admitted to the hospital Aug. 27, while the traumatized nun was taken to a convent. He said the plans called for him to be moved to Mumbai for treatment.

Asked about the how the nun coped with the trauma, Father Chellen said: "We had no option and were simply following their commands. We resisted as much as we could. This is like being tortured for Christ."END

I pray to God to send hellfire to all who participated and sympathized with the persecution, and I pray that if not hellfire in life that they spend an eternity in hell for what they have done. NO MERCY.

Indian astrologer, no danger or death prediction

Sad, but ironic. India's a dangerous place, for its own people, by the way. Hindu extremists have been killing Indian Catholics, including locking a nun and priest in a church and burning it with them inside. So it looks like even this palm reading astrology expert forest ranger is also robbed and then pointlessly shot. Hmm.

http://www.telegraphindia.com/1080826/jsp/jharkhand/story_9743908.jsp

Forest ranger shot dead

Ranchi, Aug. 25: Forest ranger Lalan Prasad Gupta (50), posted at the Palamau Tiger Reserve in Betla, was shot dead by unknown assailants, suspected to be road robbers, at 4pm yesterday at Kadwan village under Bishrampur police station in Palamau district.
His body was brought to his Kadru Road residence at 9pm today.
Forest department officials today mourned the death of Gupta who they fondly recalled “looked more like Veerappan, towering at over six feet and sporting a long moustache, but a perfect gentleman at heart and an honest and upright” official.
Palamau superintendent of police Deepak Verma revealed that on Sunday, Gupta had left his official residence at Betla where he was posted, along with four forest staff members, to perform puja at a temple located at Bishrampur, some 50km away. While returning from Bishrampur, his vehicle broke down at Kadwan village.

The forest staff got off from the vehicle and started pushing it with Gupta at the wheel. Suddenly, a group of dacoits surrounded the vehicle and demanded money from the forest ranger. Though Gupta parted with all his valuables, including cash estimated to be around Rs 7,000, the criminals demanded more money.

When Gupta expressed helplessness and the robbers failed to extract any more cash, they shot Gupta from a close range killing him on the spot.

The others were allowed to go off without being hurt.

Gupta’s colleagues told The Telegraph that the forest official had turned religious ever since one of Gupta’s sons had died due to unknown reasons some years ago.

They recalled that Gupta, despite his personal tragedies, excelled in astrology and was an excellent palmist. Hailing from Sasaram in Bihar, Gupta had joined the forest department as a ranger in 1986-87.

Chief conservator forests (wildlife) Satish Kumar Sharma described Sharma as an able and honest forest official who discharged his duties with diligence.

Gupta had told The Telegraph last month that he had ordered a complete ban on tourists coming to Betla national park for two-and-a-half months to ensure that the inmates of the park — including tigers, elephants, bears, Indian porcupines, wolves, wild boars, wild dogs, birds — get some time and space to mate in peace without being disturbed.

He had claimed that this was the only means of ensuring a spurt in wildlife population.

Gupta was also actively engaged in educating villagers located within the immediate vicinity of the Betla reserve about the need to conserve forests and wildlife.

Iran press report of mango grower saves species

The Iranian press has this article about a man in India who uses a mango tree to support the continuation of 300 species of mango fruit, some of which are endangered or no longer found outside of his tree. So many times saving a crucial part of the environment falls on a single man or woman's shoulders. What a great story and I hope he finds much success.

Baby dumped in trash to die rescued/adopted

Read this great story with picture in India.

http://www.ibnlive.com/news/dumped-in-garbage-bin-bihar-baby-finds-a-home/47036-3.html

Patna: Barely three-days-old, a baby girl lying in the ICU ward of a hospital in Patna has got a new lease of life.

Abandoned at birth, she was found lying in a garbage dump by locals who handed her over to the police.

“We heard that there was an abandoned baby at Kargil Chowk and we rushed to the place and rescued her,” says a police officer, Mudrika Prasad.

The doctors say that her condition is stable now.

As news of this abandoned baby spread in the city, a couple even approached the police and offered to adopt her as their 4th child.

“I have one daughter and two sons. She will be my fourth child,” says the baby girl’s foster mother, Yashodha.

”I saw the baby. She was so beautiful. I came back and told my wife and then we decided to adopt her,” says the baby girl’s foster father, Om Prakash.

Bless all the rescuers and the adoptive family. Notice the father had the idea of adoption and how quickly his wife agreed, what generous hearts!
