The whole idea that God existed before anything else (he is outside of and indeed the creator of space, time, energy and matter) and that he has always existed (there is no "before God") and will always exist is difficult enough for humans to understand. Closely related to this reality about God is the difficulty in understanding how exactly God is the Creator and also how he is always in control. I've thought of a simple typical experience that everyone has seen, which can help to understand by putting one in the right mindset.
Think back to a time when you have opened the window on a warm day, and a breeze blows into the window, stirring and moving the curtains. Well, the first step to understanding God is realizing that God is not standing there waving the curtains back and forth for you.
LOL! I know you are saying, well, I never thought that he was! Yes, but the misdirected human understanding of God is not too far from thinking that. The idea that "everything" has a message (from God or "someone else," like a deceased loved one or a "spirit") is only one step away from thinking that God is standing there and it is his "control" that makes the curtains move back and forth in the breeze.
Why is there this confusion? People get confused with three aspects of God's power: 1) his being the Creator 2) his being "in control" and 3) everything that happens is "God's will." This is why I realized this simple analogy will help you to understand each of these three aspects of God's power.
God created the universe, including everything in it, such as the sun which provides the warm day, the earth and the humans upon it, the weather, and thus the wind that moves the curtains. During God's creation God maintains total control over all that is created, and being All Knowing, God perfects his creation so that it continues to develop and function the way he intended. Thus God is in control because he shaped the material of his creation so that it has natural law and forces that support ongoing existence (such as atomic structures, the movement of light, the existence of mass and gravity, the effects of rotation and so forth). This is why the curtains move and God does not have to stand there and invisibly make them flap back and forth for you, ha. The curtains move because God created the materials and the forces (nature laws) of the structure of the universe and then he let them go. It's not like God has to "try it out," because remember, he is All Knowing. When God declared in the Bible that his creation is "good," that is what he meant, that he created all that the universe (and life within it) needed for it to now run on its own.
So when you heat a pot of water over an open fire, God is not having to rub the water molecules together for you so that the water becomes warm and then hot, any more than God is having to combust each of the molecules of the wood so that it would burn. Water heats over a flame because God created the infrastructure and the natural forces that would be "good," as in effective and self sustaining. Another example, gravity works not because God has to put his hand over each object and person and hold them down onto the earth, ha.
Back to our example, God created and controls the waving of the curtain in the breeze because God created time, matter and energy, and thus the forces that align and motivate them in predictable behavior of physics and science. So God created the "raw materials" for the waving of the curtain (the sun, the earth, fibers and wood, people smart enough to build houses with windows and curtains, weather including the development of wind when the temperature and pressure gradients are right, etc). When we say that God is in control, what we should mean is that everything he put into place is functioning authentically and predictably, just as it should. I've written about this before in the blog but just to remind you, an unforeseen and tragic automobile accident where there is a loss of life is in God's control not because God reaches out and pushes one car into another, but because God created a universe where if two heavy objects collide the materials within react according to physics in a predictable way.
Now that you understand, at least on a gut level, through these simple examples, how God 1) creates and 2) controls (to put it simply, he creates the raw materials and the "rules" by which creation continues onward and interacts within itself) you can better understand the levels at which something is God's will. Let's start with returning to the open window with the warm breeze that waves the curtains.
It was God's will that he decided to create a universe in the first place. It is God's will that he created in the way that he did, that it is stable and consistent, but with growth, change and movement. It is God's will that living beings will find what they need to sustain life (such as light, warmth and air). It is God's will that some beings, humans mostly but some animals too, are smart enough to shape their own dwellings. It is God's will that humans benefit from wise decisions (seeking shelter in their dwellings when weather is harsh), but it is also God's will that the power of bad weather, for example, does not suddenly halt and become benign whenever someone makes a bad decision (such as taking a boat out into the stormy seas, and remember, Jesus had to miraculously intervene when the Apostles were set upon by a storm at sea). So it is God's will that all in all, he very very VERY rarely upends and overturns the laws by which the universe of time, energy and matter operates in order to miraculously sustain someone in a bad situation, of their making or not (such as a natural disaster). It is further God's will that humans (and animals) feel pleasure, including aesthetics, in life. Thus it is God's will that the warm breeze feels good, the sun uplifts one's spirit, and the waving of the curtain in the breeze feels homey and aesthetically pleasing. Likewise, if one misjudges and makes an error (such as putting a fragile vase in front of an open window with a strong breeze, and it is knocked down), it is God's will that oops, natural forces continue to work as expected. God neither knocks down the vase nor "makes you feel bad," but that is the natural outcome of the small actions in life as time, energy, matter and human free choice interact.
So when someone devout says, usually after a sad event or loss, that it is "God's will," that is actually not a simplistic observation. It is, rather, the wise summation of the creative, by God, the controlling, by God, and free choice, by humans or by happenstance, outcome for all of the above to exist at all as a result of God's will. Yes, then, when a person dies, his or her "time had come" and it is "God's will," but the slippery slope is that one must not imagine that God is pushing some baby into a swimming pool, or cramming one car into another, or "giving" a person cancer, etc. God created all those materials, energies and potentialities (according to free choice and situations) and it is his will that with very rare exceptions, the rewards or the consequences naturally result. What do I mean by potentialities? Well, I blogged about one example before, which is being around potentially cancer causing smoke. It's not like God has to, nor is it in his nature, to reach inside someone and "give" them "cancer." Further, God does not make a person crave smoking cigarettes. All those potentialities are a matter of chemistry, physics, human genetics and human free choice. It is God's will that life has limitations and dangers, but it is also God's will that humans can seek ways to maximize the benefits of well being. Water is great, and swimming is great, but lack of a fence and a watchful parent over a baby near water is unwise. Likewise tobacco might be pleasurable to smoke in a cigarette but the problem develops when it is done to excess and becomes a habit that stimulates potential cancer in one's self or second hand in others.
So when a person mourns that the loss of a loved one is "God's will," that person is being pious and correct if they realize, as most have done so before these past few generations, that the life that one is given is unpredictable, that life is robust and forgiving while at the same time fragile and subject to defect, and that it is indeed the person's "time" because God will not intervene (except in those rare miraculous circumstances) when the known factors of a person's potential demise intersect. An example of an intersection is 1) smoking to excess 2) being of weak health or prone to easy damage 3) unable or unwilling to receive treatment. God does not 1) make the person smoke to excess 2) "give" him or her bad genes or 3) deprive them of treatment or give them a negative and bad attitude about available treatment. You see what I mean?
Moderns have become, for reasons I've discussed before 1) paranoid 2) narcissistic 3) excessively "magical" thinking and 4) disbelieving in the ultimate goodness of God and God alone. Thus there has been (and I pray that this is changing) an increasing obsession that somehow long life and wonderfulness has been guaranteed to everyone (and some of that is the "deeds" over grace error of thought) and that when an intersection of natural law and situations/human choices occurs that God (or "alien" or "other" forces) have "singled out" a person or group for hardship. That's not only wrong but it's dangerous because one then discards not only authentic belief in God but one also discards common sense and proper survival instincts and thinking.
Imagine if someone actually thought that when he opened the window and the sun shone and the breeze blew and the curtains waved that God was just standing there, waving that big peacock feather fan at him, turning on the tanning lamp and just giving him his own personal spa treatment. You'd think that person was crazy, right? Well, as I said, unfortunately many people have gotten on that slippery slope as they should have known better and worse, raised their children or taught their students that entire warped mindset. Thus many young people are paranoid and narcissistic because they feel so manipulated and at the behest of an arbitrary world filled with "unfairness" and "forces" that must be appeased/controlled! By the way, when I say "unfairness" I mean "not fair" by some human standard; I don't mean unjust because then I'd be in total agreement: the world is filled with human injustice and unrighteousness. But the word "fair" in popular thought (separate from political or legal thought) has come to mean that one's life seems disproportionate to one's expectations, and thus subject to some mysterious dispensation of favor or punishment. That kind of thinking results in attitudes such as, just for an easy example, that the life providing process by which a human body makes and stores fat is somehow bad and must be tamed. Um, no one would be alive if the body could not make and store fat, duh. But this paranoid separation from reality (both faith reality and secular reality) results in some messed up thinking.
I yearn for the time when people understood this, as they all did, prior to the last fifty years or so (with a few lunatic exceptions, of course, none of whom I need to name here).
Anyway, rather than get into that whole mess (again) in discussion, I'd rather leave you with this hopefully helpful simple analogy for understanding how God does indeed create, control and exert his will.

Urgent msg re: cancer and "healing thoughts"
Rather than people being more logical (reasoning) and developing their faith in God, there has been for years an alarming trend where people "send healing thoughts" and "send vibrations" and so forth "toward" cancer sufferers and others with diseases or injuries. This really has to stop because it is part of the problem and not part of the solution. Here is the "why."
Without giving an anatomy lesson, think of cancer as the body's reaction to what it thinks is something wrong, an internal wounding or attack. So the cancer sufferer's body "thinks" that he or she is under attack, and the development of cancer is the "healthy" but inappropriate response to the perception or reality of attack. When you mentally "urge" someone's body to "heal," you are egging on the cancer response, not diminishing it. Yeah, oops.
To better understand, think about what we do know about the causes of cancer, and what we don't know. We do know some direct correlations between contaminants such as smoke from cigarettes or the breathing of asbestos fibers and the resulting cancers. This is because as I have explained, the body "thinks" it is under attack, because it really is. Cancer is then the inadequate response to something the body cannot naturally dispose of, such as the asbestos fibers. If you mentally "urge" someone's body-or your own-to "heal" itself, you are encouraging the stimulation of the very response that the body thinks it IS using to heal, which is cancer.
On the other hand, think about people who develop lung cancer but are not smokers, or maybe have not even been around second hand smoke. Why do they get cancer? They may have some other irritant that no one realizes that has finally reached a threshold point. It's impossible, really, to analyze every particle, compound, chemical or other matter that a person has breathed in their life to date. So there are many contaminants that singularly or in group also trigger a cancer response, even if they are as yet unrecognized as carcinogens, etc. There was a lot of talk about barbecue and wood burning in the science literature for a while. See, it doesn't have to be one thing. If a person was around mild doses each but multiple sources of irritants (for lack of a better word), the adding on effect can and does cause cancer. They then wonder how they got cancer because they weren't around any of the famous well known causes. Yeah, but they were around below the threshold levels of a few or many different irritant sources, and those added together makes the normal body feel it is under attack, and hence it responds with the development of cancer cells.
Let me repeat, it's not like evil cancer cells fly into a body and attach themselves. Think of cancer as the body starting a feverish campaign to manufacture its own bandages. Tumors and cancer cells can be thought of as the body's normal, healthy but ultimately futile effort to churn out more and more bandages. When you mental monkeys send "healing vibes" to people with cancer, including yourselves, you are urging your body or theirs to produce more "bandages," more futile causing cancer efforts to address the real or perceived irritants.
Researchers know that genetic miscues are a contributor to cancer. Again, genes are healthy and normal real building blocks of your body's existence. When a gene is miscued that means it is garbling instructions that it is receiving. Like if the factory manager is told to make 100 bandages and instead he hears 10000 bandages. THAT is the "problem" with cancer.
We know that thoughts have power, which is why the Bible forbids sinful AND even "foolish" thoughts. Thoughts directed at others are real and are thus a form of ESP, which everyone has to some degree. So when you think you are some sort of mental marvel magician and "spirit worker" and send "healing thoughts" to someone, it doesn't matter what you think of that person or even if your intention is supposedly pure. You are sending another irritant to the locations where the body is already fully involved in the production of cancer. You are speeding up the assembly line of the misunderstood bandages, not slowing it down. "Healing vibes" to someone with cancer or ANY illness is a grave danger. It's like you are sending more garbled messages to the bandage producing frenzied assembly line.
That, by the way, is a reason that those who voodoo or otherwise engage in sending "bad" vibes, like wishing cancer on someone, often finds it boomerangs. Cancer is the body doing natural and healthy things, but inappropriate or inadequate to the actual task. So if you send your "enemy" wishes that he or she "gets cancer," you are urging their body to be more effective in being healthy. LOL. And because you are using your mind and spirit to do bad things, you are providing your own and your supporters own "irritants" that can very well boomerang your intentions back onto your selves. People, I've been trying to explain this to you for years in order to save you grief, not because I'm lacking in items of conversation. Unlike you, I do not wish ill on anyone: even those who amply deserve it. I know that the consequences of injustice and sin will return to the person, either in their lifetime or at God's absolute judgment of them upon their death. So those of you who think people "cause" cancer, or, in turn, think that you can wish it onto someone, take a look at how well that has turned out for you, your loved ones, and the world. FAIL.
But my focus is really on those of you who in the frenzy of wishing to "do good" and "focus on cancer" during the so-called cancer awareness month, are really trying to do a good thing but don't realize the harm that you ARE doing. This is why, I repeat, God in both the Bible and the Qur'an forbids magical type of thinking, in addition to actual magical deeds. It's because you really don't understand the biological implications of the complexity of the human body and mind, say nothing of the spiritual goodness or not. Believing that you have the power to "heal" through thoughts, and not actual band-aids and iodine, is a total fail. This is why the second thing that God insists on is prayer to him, not "vibrations" to other people. Charity, not "healing vibes" when you don't even know how the disease or situation exists in reality. Pray for the well being in God's hands of the other person; don't "manifest" your trite and simplistic views of what is "good" and what is "not."
I was reading on the blog of a friend her thoughts about silence and sound. I like what she wrote but more to the point, silence is a crucial part of healthy life. Think of cancer as a cacophony of noise, clashing frantic internal assembly lines of trying to produce more well intended but inadequate "bandages." Your ill friends and family need more silence, not more sound, so everyone should silently direct prayers to God on the friend's behalf and not add to the fail noise that is going on inside of his or her's body.
It's so ironic that the generations that value "meditating" actually provide more spiritual and actual bodily pollution noise in the name of so called "healing" than any generation past. For your own sakes stop using your minds for stupid thoughts and turn them instead back toward God, in prayer, and each other in actual hands-on charity, which is where they should have been all along. By the way, I write this in honor and memory of the great Danny Thomas, who knew first hand where all good things and healing comes, through his patron St. Jude.

Cancer's important, but what about hell?
Here's an example of how messed up, I would say, even f***ed up western society has become.
You have a month, October, in America, dedicated to obsessing about cancer. Every day we are supposed to read about it and wring our hands. And yes, by the way, I have a near relative who is a "breast cancer survivor," so forget the "insensitive" accusations LOL.
Here's the thing. Children starve to death every day around the world, and we have no daily reminder of them, do we? Or a month dedicated to babies and children who starve to death. And more so, no matter how sad an illness, or how politically correct it is, is there anything more important than a daily reminder to be genuinely and truly alright with God, since God assures us that there is a genuine and dreadful hell for all eternity?
So why not have at least a month, if not every day, reminding people of the certainty of hell for those who take the wide and easy road, and who ignore the warnings of Jesus Christ.
Now THAT would be a public service announcement of some importance. See, all the millions and millions and millions of people already in hell cannot do that public service announcement for you (see Luke 16). And, as I've pointed out before, the Qur'an is filled with assurances of the reality of hell (one could probably read one passage a day for an entire month on that subject in fact).

The tragedy of misguided revenge
The tragedy of misguided revenge
I’ve blogged about this before, but I know that unless I repeat things over and over, it just doesn’t “take” with those who have been raised with a warped mindset and broken emotional humanity. So I will repeat it again, sometimes at a different slant, hoping that each time it sinks in, and that people’s sad and deranged minds clear enough that they see the correlation between what I say and reality.
There are people who carry grudges and who act upon them, destroying people’s lives (including my own) because they think they are “avenging” loved ones who had tragic demises befall them. They think that their loved ones were “harmed” by people with “past lives.” So they carry these imaginary “beefs” into their current one and only life, based on misinterpreting why “bad things happen to good people.” They go so far as to believe that they are grandiose people who are reincarnated, and who bring their “ongoing” tragedies “into” their “current” lives.
As I’ve repeatedly explained, there is no such thing as reincarnation. Those who are of the New Age believers (as compared to the traditionalists who inherit that faith) are remarkably uneducated in science and biology, because they latch onto “reincarnation” as the “only explanation” for “what they have experienced,” even though there are a dozen more plausible explanations at ANY given time. They are too puffed up with their own “tragedy” to have even investigated one bit of cold hard science that could have genuinely enlightened and comforted them. Gosh, I think that a “just the facts” genius scientifically education atheist ought to be paired up with each inflated New Age reincarnation believer in order to provide them with the part of the brain they obviously do not use of their own. It would be like a brain backpack used to detox from bullshit.
Obviously that is a wish that I can’t imagine seeing fulfilled any time soon (not enough good well educated atheists around when you need them and those that exist I doubt want to hang around with pot smoking New Agers who refuse to crack the spine of a science text book but are eager to crack less productive things).
So all I can do it once again issue my expertise, which is a dire warning-AGAIN. Those of you who have harmed people thinking that you are “restoring the balance” and “settling grudges” are doomed to hell, and there is simply no nice way to put it. In fact, your followers who have been vengeful against others in the delusion that they are “reincarnated” and “settling the score” are already burning in hell for eternity, if they have died. Those of your followers who are still alive and active in this “reincarnation revenge squad” are walking on the path to hell, and there is no mistaking about that. Revenge based on fallacious occult beliefs is such a grave sin every way that you look at it that it is appalling and disturbing to even think about. Not only do you deprive the innocent of their lives and their peace of mind, through your revenge schemes, but you have also led people away from faith and belief in God, faith they might otherwise have found. Thus you do Satan’s work on multiple mortal sinful levels and it does not take the smartest person on the planet to realize that you have created the perfect formula for going to hell.
There are three unforgivable things in life. One is to take away the life of another human being unjustly. One is to take away their faith, or block them from every finding it and thus knowing God and his existence. The third is to “let” someone live but destroy their peace of mind, through stalking and tormenting them, ruining their childhood, or arranging hurtful scenarios to ruin their sanity or their sense of peaceful reality.
Those of you who have harmed others in your depraved New Age “belief” that you are restoring some sort of “balance” and avenging loved ones have only robbed your loved ones of your and everyone else’s company in heaven, should your loved one have achieved heaven upon death. Everyone that you have recruited to “avenge” your loved one from imaginary slights and wrongs (such as thinking she “got cancer” because of “bad past life spirits”) and yourselves are all destined for hell because of your persistent cruel error. If your loved one is in heaven he or she certainly is not seeing any loved ones who have died and who were engaged in this type of “avenging” activity on their “behalf.” So those who blindly followed you in your revenge and “balance” seeking and who have died are now roasting for eternity in hell. God help them, because you sure didn’t.
Whenever I think about those of you still doing this who are alive, I have a manifestation from God. When I think of you (which is as little as possible) I feel the fire of hell under my feet (and it sure is not burning me). This is the constant reinforcement that I have that there are those of you who are still in these vile activities and beliefs, are walking on a burning path to hell and will receive God’s promised, guaranteed response when “your time is up.” If your loved ones are in heaven they’ve sure made new friends, since none of you who worked to “avenge” them or “restore the balance” are there or will be there, unrepentant, you better understand that Buster.
In case some of you who are reading this do not know these types of people (or you think you don’t know them, but trust me, there are a lot of them around) wonder why I am so forceful, let me give you an example of how they think. Suppose one of their loved ones develops breast cancer and she dies. They are too evil and stupid to realize that cancer is caused by genetics, diet, environmental toxins, mutation, radiation, in other words, a long list of rational scientific reasons. They figure that someone out there-maybe you-“caused” her cancer because of your “evil spirits” or “past lives.” They will try to find a way to cause cancer in you to “even the balance.” If you get a bump and have a doctor check it, he or she will be sure to say it is cancerous and put you under surgery in order to avenge themselves on you, you know, take one of your boobs because it’s only fair (and actually ‘helping you’) since “you” “caused their loved one” to “get cancer.” Yes, this happens, for a fact. If one of their loved ones gets sick, in an accident, or dies, they shop around for someone to blame, and they will bring their wrath upon you in the “same way.” I cannot tell you how many lives they have destroyed, including my own.
Like the downtrodden throughout history all one can do is pray to God that these evil people realize that they are totally wrong, and also pray to God that he will destroy them in punishment for their sin, casting them into the hell that they have ordered and insisted upon for themselves. Hell is far more terrible than can be described and by the way, Satan likes to mimic what the evil doer has done, except he does it for all eternity (imagine that operating table with Satan in charge! And you can never leave it!) I don’t want to see that happen to anyone and that is why I continue to try to reason with these people even as I have been beaten to a spiritual pulp and no longer enjoy life. Every time “one of them” dies I think, “Well, they missed their chance to make things genuinely right and to repent, and now they will pay the price for all eternity.” Ironically, it’s the last thing their “loved one” would have wanted, if he or she has achieved heaven and knows the truth of things. But they will never see their loved one “avengers” again, because the hating deluded occultists have chosen the other place, and woe is to them. The Qur’an is more descriptive of hell than the Bible is and believe me, the Qur’an is much lighter in description than is the reality of hell.
HUGE step forward in understanding cancer causes
Read this article, it sounds to me like a very big step forward, although the complexity of cancer remains daunting. This is the right approach to better understanding cancer. There has been alot of guessing and thrashing in the past, but in fairness, the technology has really improved to do this kind of analysis.

A quiz for cultist New Age morons
Please read this article about "Dr. Martin King."
http://www.birminghampost.net/news/west-midlands-health-news/2008/10/13/birmingham-hospital-sacks-doctor-after-breast-cancer-patient-s-death-65233-22026520/
snip
A consultant was sacked by a Birmingham hospital following an internal inquiry into why a breast cancer patient died just 48 hours after having reconstructive surgery.
University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the Queen Elizabeth and Selly Oak hospitals, ended Dr Martin King’s contract on September 18.
Debbie Yardley, of Quinton, was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2003 - six months after a mammogram which showed tissue abnormalities was misplaced by staff, and as a result she was not recalled for further treatment.
Just weeks later, on July 2, doctors revealed the cancer had spread and the 45-year-old mother underwent a double mastectomy. Two years later Mrs Yardley underwent reconstructive breast surgery at Selly Oak Hospital.
But Dr King failed to notice after the six-hour surgery, when staff removed a ventilation tube, that she suffered a laryngospasm which caused the larynx to close, stopping air getting to her lungs, and as a result she suffered a cardio respiratory arrest.
Independent experts later found that Mrs Yardley has been given more than double the recommended dose of Bupivacaine, which is believed to have contributed to her death.
OK, now here is a multiple choice list, please choose one reason you believe that Mrs Yardley died:
1. The doctor and the hospital seem to have performed incompetently and thus caused her to die.
2. She had "bad planets" in her horoscope chart "Cancer" sector.
3. She was a bad or sad lady in a "previous life" and "deserved to die" to "restore the balance."
4. The doctor has the name of a famous black man USA Civil Rights leader, and he was assassinated, and so it is "karma" that the doctor should cause the death of some woman to "make up" for Dr. Martin Luther King beign assassinated.
5. She was infested with "body thetans" left behind by the evil Xenu and she didn't spend hundreds of thousands of dollars with $cientology to become "super human" and thus "not get cancer."
6. God is really mean and picked on her for some reason.
7. She was "reincarnated" from the Titanic, and thus having died "under water" she had trouble breathing during the surgery and that caused her larynx to close (never mind it not being noticed or the inappropriate treatment of drug overdosing she is suspected to have received).
8. She had lots of "past lives" as a "man" and thus her "present body shell" was "confused" when she had female breasts, and thus "rejected them."
Readers, I wish I was kidding and exhibiting sick humor but I am not. I have had years of evil people actually wishing that I would get cancer because they believed one of the above answers. Seriously.
Um, the correct answer is of course the first one. Everything else is the product of a sick mind that makes even the genuine Satan blush. God will punish all of you who have thought this way and acted based on those beliefs.
Oh, and just so you know I don't hold a grudge. I've decided that I will resume being compassionate, loving and caring of cancer patients (yes, even the blaspheming idolaters who are going to hell anyway), but just to show "respect" for your "beliefs," I guess I won't actually pray for you and act on that compassion until Pluto ("my ruling planet") enters that wonderful sign of "compassion" "Pisces." Cheerio until then, cancer suffering cultists.

Embryo screening ethics
Read this article about how a husband and wife created eleven embryos, screening for a breast cancer causing gene (one that is truly persistent and life threatening), selecting the embryo for implantation that was guaranteed to not have the gene. This is not casually done, since the woman's family has suffered from cancer due to this gene effect.

OK, now let's cut through the spewing from both sides. One side will be very alarmed at the ethics and "playing God" factor. The other side will hate on the "religious Bible thumping" side thinking they want the little babies to have cancer. Sheesh.
I'm not going to render an easy formula for you to follow; that's the challenge of humanity, to decide how to continue being humans. But I will tell you that you cannot solve the problem without realizing one factor.
Read this snip from the article:
“We had been through his sister being ill, so it was something we had seen first hand. I thought this was something I had to try because, if we had a daughter with the gene, and she was ill, I couldn’t look her in the face and say I didn’t try.”
This is the mother saying she would feel guilty if she had a baby who developed the cancer, who then as an adult, the mother would have to tell her that she could have cured it but didn't try. Er, um, you wouldn't have that conversation. The child that would have had the cancer is now not going to be born or be alive at all. It's not like you did a body swap for the same person. You've decided not to let the person who would have the cancer become alive at all, in order to have a completely separate and different sibling be the one chosen to become alive. You can't have an imaginary conversation with the child that you decided not to have at all.
Now, I'm not being hard on the mother, but if we are to have this ethics discussion at all, people need to have a clue that they are not talking about a "cure." They are opting not to bring to life a person who has this gene. They are opting to bring to life a sibling who does not have the gene. It's not like you did a body and soul swap to "cure" the cancer in the baby you would have had anyway. That's biological idiocy, and understandable in how the mother needs to rationalize her decision in her own heart, but people who plan to have a thoughtful discussion on either side of the issue need realize that the embryo "not selected" is the entire life not lived. People may decide they can live with that kind of system for truly dire genetic conditions, but they need to be factual about it and not romanticize it.
I really hope that she is not so spiritually unaware that she thinks God has one and only soul hovering in the waiting room while she chooses an embryo, and that one soul goes into the "chosen cancer free body." Um, nope, that does not happen. Each of those embryos would have received their own individual selected soul (selected by God) upon each one coming to life. God doesn't set aside a soul to give to the next available body. So when that embryo was not selected, that soul would never come to life. Instead, a soul just for the embryo that is selected comes to life. So she'd not be having the cozy chat with the "soul that would have been born anyway" telling her offspring that she made sure "that soul got a cancer gene free body." Nope.

Missouri town has cluster of brain tumor cases
This is an interesting and scary article.

Town Sees Cluster Of Brain Tumor Cases
More Than 12 Brain Tumor Cases Diagnosed In 7 Months
snip
Doctors are only required to report cancerous brain tumors to the Health Department. Most of the tumors in Cameron are large, but benign. So there is no official agency collecting the data.
Drinking water is one thing all of those diagnosed have in common. That is why a local reservoir, a source of the drinking water, will likely be one focus of the investigation.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it will look at any possible runoff near the reservoir and any possibility of contamination from a nearby hog farm. The CDC asked about manufacturing in the area past and present. Insulation used to be produced at a plant on the outskirts of town. Investigators will also look at pesticide use and the combination of chemicals that might be present, and anything those diagnosed with brain tumors have in common.
Cameron's city manager said the city is not jumping to any conclusions, saying maybe it is just an anomaly or an unexplained cluster. But he said the city is fully aware of what he called the recent "flurry" of brain-tumor cases. He said the city clerk is one of those diagnosed.
In the last few days, the Department of Natural Resources had a crew out collecting air, water and soil samples.
Eckerman said that she has been in contact with the majority of people who have come forward with a brain tumor in Cameron or their loved ones. Some are still recovering from brain surgery. Some have had setbacks. Two residents who wanted to tell their stories on camera are back in the hospital and were not able to talk.
***
OK, I have a few reactions to this incident and suggestions to make or things to highlight. The first is that you should notice that it is citizens themselves who tend to notice these things. Public health and government or medical officials tend to do squat about noticing odd and concerning clusters of illness. For example, notice the state Health Department does not track benign tumors, only the cancerous ones, even though a benign tumor is obviously a serious condition too. People who get benign tumors are ill, need surgery etc just as much as those whose tumors end up being cancerous, yet their numbers are not reported or tracked at all. The point I want to make is that US citizens have grown up with some sort of assumption that officials are looking out for the public health and welfare while in fact they are not since they don't even collect many of the basic statistics.
It reminds me of the huge controversy about thirty years ago when the first statistics for cancer were really collected and discussed and clusters of breast cancer were discovered in parts of Long Island, New York. It seems to me that as a country we have not really progressed much from those days when citizens themselves are the ones to notice clusters of concern and then it gets in the media, but there are few answers and many questions. I think that if anything public health is less a priority these days than it was several decades ago in this country. People need to start asking questions and become self empowered and informed on a grassroots level. (I feel so old typing this. "Grassroots" level advocacy was so much the catch word thirty to forty years ago.) However, it seems that we really need to once again have a grassroots movement toward self and community monitoring of health issues.
Another point I want to make is to have you notice the variety of things the officials will explore that are environmental factors. This shows that there are many things that may or may not be significant and it is very hard to find a "smoking gun" when one is studying cancer. I may have mentioned this before in my blogging but it is worth repeating. Around thirty years ago when people really turned their attention toward the proliferation of breast cancer (First Lady Betty Ford being such a ground breaker in this topic) there were studies that showed that Japanese women had very little breast cancer, while American women had high rates of breast cancer. Some studies showed, however, that as Japanese women moved to the United States their rate of breast cancer started to increase. This set off a lot of speculation about the impact of diet. Years later researchers in general look toward genetic influences too. It is very likely that cancer has a component that is genetic tendency and a component that is environmental trigger. So the people in this town of Cameron have a really complicated situation to analyze. Often the researchers never really reach a single factor or conclusion, to the pain and frustration of those who are suffering from an illness.
Larry King had an interesting show tonight about whether cell phones have an influence on the anecdotal increases in brain cancers that many are observing (for example this show had the widow of the attorney Johnny Cochran). I've been very uncomfortable for many years with the proliferation of cell phones and also wireless devices. I noticed that doctors on the Larry King show danced around saying "yes" or "no," but admitted to using earpieces and so forth to mitigate possible effects. Rural and small town people need to look at this too as they explore possible causes of clusters of brain tumors.
Another thing to keep in mind is that it is difficult for pollutants and organisms to get into the brain. This is why antibiotics usually do not work for infections above the neck region, since the body has a strenuous barrier against chemicals, organisms and pollutants from getting into the brain. If you think about this, it ought to make you cautious about engaging in behavior that can stimulate overcoming the brain and head area's natural defenses. For example, smokers and those who use marijuana or other substances are basically stamping down a pathway between your body and your brain via the substance abuse. Same with alcohol. When researchers look at the causes of brain tumors they need to keep that in mind. Something as harmless as having once been a cigarette smoker may have weakened the natural protective barriers that exist in the brain and head region since the smoke is basically forcing a way into the body and through the bloodstream to the brain. For lack of a better word, think of certain substances as being "abrasive." They roughen up and overcome a body's natural balance and defenses. These must be really soberly considered in any thorough research. So as everyone is, correctly, speaking more about brain tumors, especially in the light of the Ted Kennedy revelation of his condition, people need to also think back over diet and behavior patterns, not in a blaming way, but to have a complete picture of the dynamics that may have caused an individual case or more importantly what might be behind a clustering of cases.
I've offered a number of pointers about how to analyze a problem like this, and the article lists a number of environmental factors that will, correctly, be explored. So you can see there is no shortage of potential causes and triggers of cancers in general, and specifically brain tumors, both benign and cancerous. There is no need to bark up the wrong tree by thinking about "mystical" and "magical" or "karma" causes. It is sad to say that many research dollars toward cancer research have been wasted because there are often secret beliefs of even those who seem the most scholarly on the surface about ridiculous "causes" of cancer, including "astrology" and "past lives." It sounds insane and I agree, and I would never have guessed it until I overheard that I was actually accused of "causing" people to get cancer. People are so much more ignorant, primitive, deluded and sorcery obsessed than any time in their history, and that includes Colonial times. I can't really explain it except to say that it is true that "nature abhors a vacuum." When there is an empty space, such as the space that has been created by the rejection of organized religion and God's role in the public square, other things rush into the vacuum to fill the space. Superstition and sorcery return, sucked into the vacuum in the human spirit caused by their pushing away of God. Then the boundaries between delusion and fact break down. Religion and faith in God used to occupy a well understood component of human life. One could be, and often was, for example, a very faithful and believing man or woman and simultaneously a well educated doctor or researcher. But when one rejects God and organized religion, one soon contaminates the rational and scholarly part of your life with superstition and magical thinking. ("Magical thinking" is the belief that non factual influences cause real events. For example, children go through a magical thinking phase as part of their growing up until they learn how the world around them actually works. Like they will see something impossible in a cartoon and believe it until a certain age when they realize it can't be done but is simply there to be funny.) Many adults in this generation have fallen into magical thinking and it has infested even the scholarly circles that humans rely on for protection in public health matters. Don't waste your time, money and your lives or your loved ones' lives any further with supporting maniacs who think "cancer" can be "determined" to be in someone's astrology sign, for example. I wish I was joking or expressing hyperbole how common this magical thinking epidemic has become. But I'm not.
Hope you found this blogging posting helpful.

Some have had setbacks. Two residents who wanted to tell their stories on camera are back in the hospital and were not able to talk.
