Dominic of Silos (circa 1000-73)

Born in Navarre, Spain, of peasant parents.
Was a shepherd in his youth.
Became a Benedictine monk.
Became prior.
Was driven from the monastery into exile when he refused to cede its lands to the king.
Went to a different monastery and became its abbot.
He reformed that monastery and turned it into one of the leading spiritual houses in Spain.
The monastery's scriptorium produced outstanding Christian art.
He helped to rescue Christian slaves from the Moors.
He was credited with miracles of healing.
