Another song I think about

"Continental Drift" by the Rolling Stones.

It caught my attention when it was first released, not just cuz I like it, but as an appreciator of art, I did wonder where some of the images in the song really came from.... Cool nonetheless....

Music talk

Do a search for the lyrics, or listen to the song online, of "Dear Diary" by the Moody Blues.

The "events" casually mentioned in the fade out at the end are quite droll. It's a classic song and it runs through my mind fairly often through the decades...

Music talk follow-up

For a simple yet profound place to do some individual thought and study about what I said in the previous post, do a search for lyrics of bluesman Robert Johnson's songs and read them.

Hint, start with one of my favorites, "Crossroad blues."

The lyrics seem simple at a glance, but that is one of the clues, for in a few lines he's conveyed profound validity and truthful images, yet in strikingly artful ways. I don't mean just because he mentions the Lord. Look at the image of the rising sun going down. He conveys sadness by implying that the sun which has just risen is already setting. So you can believe in a truthful and realistic world and still convey incredible power in music.

And most of all, keep in mind these artists were writing real words with what they really meant, not filled with anagrams and coded messages. You can listen to the song and believe what you hear as being both valid and truthful.

Repeat of lyrics of a favorite song

This is my favorite "Elton John" and "Bernie Taupin" song. I think I have blogged about this before.

"Where To Now St. Peter?"

I took myself a blue canoe
And I floated like a leaf
Dazzling, dancing
Half enchanted
In my Merlin sleep

Crazy was the feeling
Restless were my eyes
Insane they took the paddles
My arms they paralyzed

So where to now St. Peter
If it's true I'm in your hands
I may not be a Christian
But I've done all one man can
I understand I'm on the road
Where all that was is gone
So where to now St. Peter
Show me which road I'm on
Which road I'm on

It took a sweet young foreign gun
This lazy life is short
Something for nothing always ending
With a bad report

Dirty was the daybreak
Sudden was the change
In such a silent place as this
Beyond the rifle range

I took myself a blue canoe

Music talk, "Laugh, Laugh" by Beau Brummels

As I've blogged before and people who've known me for a long time know, I was listening to pop radio even as a very small toddler and enjoy the songs of the 1950's very much. This song popped into my mind (the tune is awesome) as they sometimes do, so I thought I'd introduce you to this great oldie song. Just to be precise, this is a Beattle era song, hit the charts in 1965, but to me, it is an oldie, LOL.

I hate to say it but I told you so

Don't mind my preaching to you

I said "don't trust him", baby, now you know

You don't learn everything there is to know in school

Wouldn't believe me when I gave advice

I said that he was a tease

If you want help you better ask me nice

So be sincere, convince me with a "pretty please"

(Chorus)Laugh, Laugh, I thought I'd die

It seemed so funny to me,

Laugh, Laugh, you met a guy

who taught you how it feels to be

Lonely, oh so lonely

Don't think I'm being funny when I say

You got just what you deserve

I can't help feeling you found out today

You thought you were too good you had a lot of nerve

Won't say I'm sorry for the things I said

I'm glad he packed up to go

You kept on bragging he was yours instead

Found you don't know everything there is to know

(Chorus)

Before I go I'd like to say one thing

Don't close your ears to me

Take my advice and you'll find out that being

Just another girl won't cause you misery

You say you can get any boy at your call

Don't be so smug or else

You'll find you can't get any boy at all

You'll wind up an old lady sitting on the shelf

(Chorus)

Lonely, oh so lonely

Thinking about an old time song

All of us, kids and adults, knew this song in the 1950's and would sing it.

For those of you who don't know, clover is normally three leaf but once in a while one has four leaves.
Here is a great picture of one:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Four-leaf_clover.jpg

One summer my mother sat on the ground in our back yard and searched through all the clover, one by one, to find four leaf clovers to press in a book and preserve for us kids. She found like four of them in all her searching!

I'M LOOKING OVER A FOUR-LEAF CLOVER
Art Mooney
Words by Mort Dixon, music by Harry Woods

Written in 1927 - popularized in 1948 by Art Mooney

I'm looking over a four-leaf clover

That I overlooked before.

One leaf is sunshine, the second is rain,

Third is the roses that grow in the lane.

No need explaining, the one remaining

Is somebody I adore.

I'm looking over a four-leaf clover

That I overlooked before

marymajor's Diary: December 28

"Dear Diary" by The Moody Blues

Dear diary, what a day it's been.
Dear diary, it's been just like a dream.
Woke up too late.
Wasn't where I should have been.
For goodness sake what's happening to me.
Write lightly, yours truly, dear diary.

It was cold outside my door.
So many people by the score.
Rushing around so senselessly.
They don't notice there's people like me.
Write lightly, yours truly, dear diary.

They don't know what they're playing.
Oh and They've no way of knowing what the game is.
Still they carry on doing what they can.
Outside me, and politely, dear diary.

It's over. Will tomorrow be the same?
I know that they're really not to blame.
If they wern't so blind then surely they'd see.
There's a much better way for them to be.
Inside me, yours truly, dear diary.

Dear Diary, it was cold today.
But the sun came out later,
so I went out and strolled about lookin' at the shops.
Didn't really see anything I liked, so I didn't buy anything.
Oh, now I know I posted a letter.
Been quite a nice day.

Somebody exploded an H-bomb today.
But it wasn't anyone I knew.

Song I often think of in times like these

http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Child-in-Time-lyrics-Deep-Purple/73E46DE8313164A54825695E0004DA1A

Sweet child in time,
you'll see the line
(the) Line that's drawn between
(the) good (in us) and (the) bad (in us)
See the blind man
shooting at the world
Bullets flying,
ooh taking toll
If you've been bad -
Oh Lord I bet you have
And you've not been hit
oh by flying lead
You'd better close your eyes,
aahaouho bow your head
Wait for the ricochet

Ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo..
Ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo..
Aaa-aaa-aaa..
Oh, I wanna hear you sing..
Aaa-aaa-aaa..
Oaoh..
AAA-AAA-AAA!!
AAA-AAA-AAA!!

Song lyrics: Volunteers of America, Jefferson AP

I really disliked Jefferson Airplane, the quintessential acid rock band of the 1960's, because their songs were so pro-drug and anti-family life, with an unbearable smear of unfounded self righteousness. Still, I acknowledged their great talent. However, many years later, when they reformed as Jefferson Starship and did more love ballads, I liked them, mostly because lead singer Marty Balin is one of my all time favorites. I love his voice and his singing passion.

Anyway, here is a short song from their psychedelic rock period called "Volunteers of America." I think you can see what I mean. It's an interesting case study of how a generation took drugs and totally discarded everything that the generations before had learned about love and life. Ironic that they thought this (their) generation "got soul," just as the reality of soul, of God, of consequences for actions was rejected.

Look what's happening out in the streets
Got a revolution Got to revolution
Hey I'm dancing down the streets
Got a revolution Got to revolution
Ain't it amazing all the people I meet
Got a revolution Got to revolution
One generation got old
One generation got soul
This generation got no destination to hold
Pick up the cry
Hey now it's time for you and me
Got a revolution Got to revolution
Come on now we're marching to the sea
Got a revolution Got to revolution
Who will take it from you
We will and who are we
We are volunteers of America

The pretentiousness even after all these years, as we live among the social, spiritual and family ruins, is interesting.

Borrow some Billy Joel lyrics: Allentown

http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Allentown-lyrics-Billy-Joel/0AE8791D80B8FC4948256870001C98F3

Well we're living here in Allentown
And they're closing all the factories down
Out in Bethlehem they're killing time
Filling out forms
Standing in line.

snip

So the graduations hang on the wall
But they never really helped us at all
No they never taught us what was real
Iron and coke,
Chromium steel.

And we're waiting here in Allentown.
But they've taken all the coal from the ground
And the union people crawled awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

aaaaaaaaaaah aaaaaah.

Lyrics from a favorite Elton John song

From his album "Tumbleweed Connection," which was one of my favorites, borrowed from the library, when I was in high school, until I could afford to buy my own copy.
