Song lyrics: Volunteers of America, Jefferson AP

I really disliked Jefferson Airplane, the quintessential acid rock band of the 1960's, because their songs were so pro-drug and anti-family life, with an unbearable smear of unfounded self righteousness. Still, I acknowledged their great talent. However, many years later, when they reformed as Jefferson Starship and did more love ballads, I liked them, mostly because lead singer Marty Balin is one of my all time favorites. I love his voice and his singing passion.

Anyway, here is a short song from their psychedelic rock period called "Volunteers of America." I think you can see what I mean. It's an interesting case study of how a generation took drugs and totally discarded everything that the generations before had learned about love and life. Ironic that they thought this (their) generation "got soul," just as the reality of soul, of God, of consequences for actions was rejected.

Look what's happening out in the streets
Got a revolution Got to revolution
Hey I'm dancing down the streets
Got a revolution Got to revolution
Ain't it amazing all the people I meet
Got a revolution Got to revolution
One generation got old
One generation got soul
This generation got no destination to hold
Pick up the cry
Hey now it's time for you and me
Got a revolution Got to revolution
Come on now we're marching to the sea
Got a revolution Got to revolution
Who will take it from you
We will and who are we
We are volunteers of America

The pretentiousness even after all these years, as we live among the social, spiritual and family ruins, is interesting.
