Of a Saxon family, he was raised by his uncle, a Bishop, when orphaned as a child.
He studied at the cathedral school of Heidelberg and at Mainz, where he was ordained (priest).
In 987 he became imperial chaplain and tutor to the child Emperor Otto III.
Elected bishop in 993.
Built a church, monastery, and administered his see.
Interested in architecture, art, and metalwork, and created several metalwork pieces.
Argued with an Archbishop over rights to a convent and won.
Became a Benedictine (in other words, joined a monastic order) in later life.
