Spiritual direction: Recommended reading

I strongly suggest that you read this Encyclical Letter by Pope Pius XII, written in 1953. It touches on many things that people are thinking about today, though often in a very skewed way, since they have lost their continuity of faith. The time frame of this encyclical is fascinating, as the Pope references relatively recent Marian apparitions. It also confirms the linkage between Marian devotion and morality. Do read it, it's very enriching and spiritually nourishing. It also is part of better understanding the role of the Vicar of Christ.
