This is from the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A litany is a form of reverential prayer consisting of a series of short phrases that are lists of attributes or titles. I want to include here just a portion of the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary because this section is both inspirational and poetic, but also soothing and comforting.
Mirror of justice,
Seat of wisdom,
Cause of our joy,
Spiritual vessel,
Vessel of honor,
Singular vessel of devotion,
Mystical rose,
Tower of David, *
Tower of ivory,
House of gold,
Ark of the covenant,
Gate of heaven,
Morning star,
Health of the sick,
Refuge of sinners,
Comforter of the afflicted,
Help of Christians, *
Queen of Angels,
Queen of Patriarchs,
Queen of Prophets,
Queen of Apostles,
Queen of Martyrs,
Queen of Confessors,
Queen of Virgins,
Queen of all Saints,
Queen conceived without original sin,
Queen assumed into heaven,
Queen of the most holy Rosary,
Queen of Peace.
One can never go wrong, and only have increased serenity, pondering these qualities and titles of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
* My favorite "one" of this group? Tower of David. I'll explain the reasons in a second post tomorrow. It's past five AM in the morning now! zzzzzz
* By the way, the line "Help of Christians" was added to the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary by Pope St. Pius V (1566-1572). This is just another example of the enormous continuity and range of the Church's 2000 year history, as this litany was already a long time in use when the Pope makes a beautiful addition to this prayer over four hundred years ago.
