One of my top five or so favorite works of art is da Vinci's cartoon "The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne and Saint John the Baptist" in the National Gallery, London. It is sublime.

No hidden messages; nothing but sublime mastery of the spirit and the drawing. Do see it if you are in London. Part of the experience is seeing it in the darkness and very dim lighting that is needed to preserve this fragile work.
