Look at photo of Afro-American Civil war soldiers

Photograph from the main eastern theater of war, the Army of the James, June 1864-April 1865. Shows forty African American soldiers sitting and standing on a slight hill.

This is from a great online collection by the Library of Congress of around 1000 Civil War photographs.

Here is one that I like, showing General Ulysses S. Grant leaning over Gen. Meade to look at a map.

Just by web surfing one can find accurate and factual depictions of what happened and what it looked like, even so far back as the Civil War.

Here is the main page for this Civil War collection of photographs.
