A reading from the Qur'an

Here is one of several mentions of John the Baptist in the Qur'an.

Surah 21:89-90, 91

And Zakariya [Zachary, father of John], when he cried to his Lord: O my Lord! leave me not alone; and Thou art the best of inheritors.

So We responded to him and gave him Yahya [John the Baptist] and made his wife [Elizabeth, mother of John] fit for him [Zachary]; surely they used to hasten, one with another, in deeds of goodness and to call upon Us, hoping and fearing, and they were humble before Us.

The next line is about Mary:

And she who guarded her chastity, so We breathed into her of Our inspiration and made her and her son a sign for the nations.
