More from Mumbai, motivations?

I don't know about you, but I've been frustrated by the chaos, particularly as reported here on the news networks, claiming that the terrorists have not spoken and not given a motive.

Yet here is this snip from the Times of India.

We want all Mujahideen released: Terrorist inside Oberoi

MUMBAI: A militant holed up inside Mumbai's Oberoi Hotel told a television news channel on Thursday that seven attackers were holding hostages

"There are seven of us inside hotel Oberoi," the man identified as Sahadullah told the channel. "We want all Mujahideens held in India released and only after that we will release the people."

The terrorist said he belonged to an Indian Islamist group that is seeking an end to the persecution of Indian Muslims.

Identifying himself as a member of a group calling itself Deccan Mujahedeen, the gunman, who was holed up in the Oberoi Trident Hotel, called for the release of all fellow Islamic militants detained in India.

"Muslims in India should not be persecuted. We love this as our country but when our mothers and sisters were being killed, where was everybody?" he told the channel by phone from inside the hotel, which is surrounded by army commandos. "Release all the Mujahideens, and Muslims living in India should not be troubled," he said.

OK, my point in posting this is that I'm suspicious that Indian officials might not release all that they know about the motives of the terrorists. They are riding a wave of understandable worldwide sympathy and condemnation of the attacks... but they are also kind of making it look like these guys are killing for no "reason" (no matter how mistaken the reason may be). Britain and the USA in particular must be a little wary in future days of how much they are actually obtaining in good intelligence regarding motives. I suspect the lack of hostage negotiating is kind of going both ways, if you know what I mean.
