Another opportunity to see shared perspectives

Conservatives in the USA correctly identify the foundation for self identity and security of our nation as "borders, language, and culture." Some liberals view this as being negative toward legal and illegal immigrants, but it is rather a statement of fact that expresses how the USA gels into a country and has secure continuity of its self identity.

I was reading about Iran's President Ahmadinejad's meeting with Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa before attending the meeting in OPEC. With a smile of recognition I read the following quote by President Ahmadinejad:

"Tehran-Manama ties are historical relations and our commonalities are: Islam, culture and neighborhood."

So "even" in Iran you can totally recognize shared perspectives. Culture defines the USA and Iran. In the USA people are afraid to say that Judeo-Christian values are part of our country's self identity, since we are in a pogrom and purge of religiosity in the public square (unlike what the Founding Fathers intended) so the closest we can say is "language" (English) defines our values (historically) while in Iran there is no problem saying their values are Islamic. And then we speak of "borders" as our neighborhood definition and the outline of our country's boundaries, while Iran uses the word neighborhood. It is very interesting to look at things this way, isn't it? Eye opening I would hope for some...
