Cardinal Justin Rigali, who visited the wounded officer at the hospital on the day of the shooting, offered condolences today to the Cassidy family and police officers.

"I hope and pray for an end to the senseless violence plaguing the city of Philadelphia," the cardinal said. "The lack of regard for human life plays out tragically on city streets each day. I urge all people of good will to join me in working for an end to violence."

The doughnut shop, in the 6600 block of North Broad Street, remained closed today, the pavement stained where the officer fell. A sign reported that it would reopen Monday.

Council President Anna C. Verna announced at this morning's City Council meeting that Cassidy had died. A groan went up from the chamber, and then a moment of silence was held.

"Let's just hope that things change in this city," Verna said.

"This is not a time for political statements. This is not a time for anything other than sorrow, condolences for the family of the deceased, Sylvester Johnson said at the news conference.

Cassidy, was a 25-year veteran of the police department. He was married and had three children.
