VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- While many Catholics in the Middle East suffer from discrimination and may even be denied religious freedom, Pope Benedict XVI encouraged them to engage in dialogue with their Muslim and Jewish neighbors and to strengthen their bonds with other Christians.

In witnessing to the "living presence of Christ who came to reconcile the world to the Father," the pope said, the region's Christian communities must work together.

In addition, he said, "encountering members of other religions, Jews and Muslims, is a daily reality for you."

"In your countries, the quality of relations between believers has a very special significance of being both a witness to faith in the one God and a contribution to establishing more fraternal relations among persons and groups," the pope said.

The Pope once again states the truth that Jews, Christians and Muslims believe in, witness to and worship the same "one God." They are different religions but the same God. Jews, Muslims and Christians who state that each other's faith worship different Gods are in error and this is not the authentic Catholic belief. I am glad that the Holy Father continues to educate those who listen to him in this very important recognition of the one mutually shared God.
