James Beach was 4 years old when his father left. The experience of growing up without his father motivated Beach to stay involved in his son's life.

"I know what it feels like not to have a dad, so I decided that my kid will have me in his life," said Beach, 28, whose son, James Jr., 4, attends the St. Brigid School's Head Start program on Syracuse's West End. He lives with his fiancee and their son.

Beach was among 500 men who participated in the second annual Male Involvement Program on Thursday, organized for Head Start families in Onondaga County.
