What I wrote regarding Majerus abort controversy

Here's an email I sent to an ESPN sports talk show about "Catholic" coach Majerus who spouts off about how he believes in abortion and embryonic stem cell research while working for a Catholic University. He is correctly chastised by Archbishop Burke. Most talk shows confuse freedom of speech and mean old Catholics, as usual. So read what I wrote.

Hi XXX, love your show, listen to it most nights.

Everyone is missing the point about Majerus, especially when using the "question him while before hiring" example as you did.

If Catholics were questioned prior to hiring we would find that some people have affairs, use birth control, have gay sex, steal from their employers or employees, tell a lot of untruths, had or procured an abortion for someone, and either commit or have secret sympathy for any number of sins. In other words everyone is a sinner. There is no point in trying to predetermine anyone's morality in an interview because everyone would fail.

However a leader (such as Majerus) who chooses to declare himself or herself a Catholic should not advocate for contrary "pro sin" positions because they are in a position to influence by example of their position. That is why Archbishop Burke correctly chastises him. Majerus could have kept his mouth shut and prayed for growing wisdom regarding his "personal beliefs." He could give Hilary her money and a thumbs up and kept his mouth shut instead of eagerly providing an anti Catholic Church stance.

Further, to clear up another point, Archbishop Burke would be within his rights to withhold the receiving of the Holy Eucharist from Majerus, just as for politicians who publicly advocate for anti-Catholic teachings yet show up and claim to be good Catholics. No one forces them to be Catholics and the right to the Holy Eucharist is not the same as buying a loaf of stone ground wheat bread in the 711.

I actually pray that even as people "defend" Majerus from the "mean" Archbishop that instead, light bulbs will start to dawn for Majerus and others. No one is making them be a Catholic. No one is going to dilute being a "faithful to God" Catholic just so his fanny can warm one of our pews.

Keep up the good work on your fun show.
